I never posted a thread without poll -_-.
When you create a thread with poll, the thread appears while you create the poll.

You select: "Yes, post a poll with this thread"
click submit new thread.
Forum says:

Thank you for posting! You will now be taken to your post. If you opted to post a poll, you will now be allowed to do so.

Click here if your browser does not automatically redirect you.

Meanwhile the thread is created and people can start replying.

As for the topic, maybe more non wow related articles and less overrated murlocs, bunnies, cookies and whatnot
